Yes, this is an Italian word, but no, it doesn't mean "sandwich,' it means "sandwichES." This seems like a minor complaint, but why didn't they just call it a "panino." It would bother me less if people went around saying paninos (which in case you're a little slow, is not the correct way to say to "sandwiches"). Saying paninis is just redundant.
If you're interested, in Italian, you don't add an "s" to make a word plural; you add an "e" or "i" depending if it's masculine or feminine.
1 panino, 2 panini
1 cane, 2 cani (dog/s)
1 nonna, 2 nonne (grandmother/s)
1 nonno, 2 nonni (grandfather/s)
